Interstates 29 and 35 provide a critical north-south transportation avenue for drug traffickers. Iowa also serves as a transshipment point for drugs being transported to the eastern United States via Interstate 80. Hispanic trafficking organizations import large quantities of methamphetamine into Iowa, sometimes with their shipments of cocaine and marijuana.

There were 691 arrests for drug abuse violations in Des Moines during 2004.

Data from 2003 indicate that 48.7% of Des Moines adult male arrestees tested positive for marijuana at arrest.

Approximately 32.3% of Des Moines adult male arrestees interviewed during 2003 reported receiving inpatient/residential treatment at some point in their lives.
